HBA of Central Missouri sponsors LSTC student chapter
On January 20, The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) approved the charter of Linn State Technical College’s student chapter for the Home Builders Association (HBA). The charter presentation will take place at the HBA of Central Missouri general membership meeting on April 14.
One of only four student chapters in the state of Missouri, the LSTC student chapter will be sponsored by the HBA of Central Missouri. As the sponsor of the student chapter, the local association plays an important role in the educational and career development of students.
The student chapter, currently open to only Design Drafting Technology students, will be open to students in other LSTC degree programs starting in the fall of 2010. The programs that will be eligible for membership, include but are not limited to: Commercial Turf & Grounds Management; Construction & Civil Technology; Design Drafting Technology; Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning Technology; Heavy Equipment Operations; Heavy Equipment Technology; Industrial Electricity; and Medium/Heavy Truck Technology.
Current student chapter members recently attended the HBA Legislative Day at the Capitol in Jefferson City, attended the HBA Home Show and hosted barbeques on campus. In April, the student chapter will also host a Student Government Association event for the LSTC student body.
The HBA of Central Missouri is currently in the process of retrofitting a Habitat for Humanity home into a certified green home. In fall of 2010, student chapter members will have the opportunity to be a part of this project. “The project will involve many of the student chapter members,” said Aaron Kliethermes, Design Drafting Technology instructor and LSTC HBA Student Chapter Advisor. “This will give the members real life experiences.”
The student chapter is working this spring with the Central Missouri Community Action (CMCA) group to assist with small scale projects in the Linn area.
In addition to the community service projects, students in the eligible programs will be competing in the NAHB’s Residential Design Competition and presenting their design at the International Builders Show throughout the United States in February 2011.
With more than 25 programs, Linn State Technical College is Missouri’s only public two-year technical college with a statewide mission. LSTC has campuses in Linn, Mexico and Jefferson City. LSTC prepares students for profitable employment and a life of learning.
