Boy Scouts gather at Linn State for Merit Badge University
Over 350 Boy Scouts of America gathered at Linn State Technical College for the Boy Scouts Merit Badge University on Saturday, July 27, 2013.
For the twelfth year, Linn Boy Scout Troop 17 held the Merit Badge University at Linn State. Debbie Backes, Troop 17 coordinator, along with Stephanie Scheulen, enrollment management associate for Linn State, and other college employees, coordinated the all-day event which started with an opening flag ceremony. The opening ceremonies concluded with participants reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, Scout Oath and Scout Law.
Shortly following the ceremonies, scouts dispersed to one of 35 merit badge classes to learn the basics of the topic and gain hands-on experience. By the end of the day the scouts earned a merit badge that moved them one step closer to attaining the Eagle Rank.
“It’s always an honor to host the Boy Scouts Merit Badge University in cooperation with Troop 17,” stated Dr. Donald Claycomb, Linn State President. “Those things learned at Merit Badge University both broaden horizons and provide life skills for young men. We enjoy working with the community to host this worthwhile project.”
Merit Badges offered during the Merit Badge University included: animal science; archery; automotive maintenance; aviation; chess; citizenship in the community; citizenship in the nation; citizenship in the world; communication; computers; crime prevention; dentistry; dog care; drafting; electricity; electronics; emergency preparedness; engineering; fingerprinting; fire safety; first aid; fish and wildlife management; genealogy; home repairs; law; metalwork; music; personal fitness; personal management; photography; public speaking; search and rescue, soil and water conservation; stamp collecting; and traffic safety.
