Linn State observes Veterans Day
Veteran Bob Scruggs speaks about his experience in the military
Linn State Technical College and the LSTC Veteran’s Club hosted a Veterans Day Ceremony on Monday, November 12 on the main campus in Linn, Missouri.
Each November, Linn State students, faculty and staff gather to remember, thank and honor the men and women in the various branches of the United States Armed Forces.
This year’s celebration included a keynote address from Robert “Bob” T. Scruggs, owner of Scruggs Lumber Company in Jefferson City. Scruggs, a retired colonel of the Missouri National Guard and a veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, shared his thoughts about serving in the military before members of the Linn VFW and the Freeburg American Legion.
According to Scruggs, he comes from a long line of military men and women. He had family members on both sides of the Civil War, his grandfather on his mother’s side was wounded five days before the end of World War I and his parents were both naval officers in World War II.
“When it came my time to join the military, Uncle Sam came looking for me,” said Scruggs. “I was given a service number and my number started with US. I was drafted.”
After being drafted, Scruggs was confident he wouldn’t be selected for combat. “They gave you three choices,” commented Scruggs. “One of my choices was a finance officer. I worked at a lumber yard. I was good with numbers. It was a good fit.”
To his surprise, Scruggs was sent to infantry training, which was followed by combat engineer training. “All of 1969, I was in Vietnam serving my country,” said Scruggs.
Upon his return home, Scruggs sought employment with the Missouri National Guard. “At that time, they didn’t need me,” said Scruggs. “It was nearly 14 years later before I was hired at the National Guard.”
For Scruggs, Veterans Day is a time to celebrate the past, the present and the future. “The men and women serving in the military are a link from their generation to mine,” commented Scruggs. “And there generation is a link to the future generations of men and women who will serve this country in the military.”
With more than 35 programs, Linn State Technical College is Missouri’s only public two-year technical college with a statewide mission. LSTC prepares students for profitable employment and a life of learning. LSTC has three locations in Linn, Mexico and Jefferson City.
